One of the most common & notorious problems w/ K-series engines include a 'slap' rattle noise upon start up. This is commonly attributed to defects in the timing chain tensioner and slack in the timing tensioner.
-
The conditions of a stretched timing chain & defective tensioner can occur for many reasons including:
-General wear. The Guides & stretch will naturally stretch w/ time
-Stronger valvetrain component parts including valve springs/retainers and/or cams. This puts additional strain on the chain resulting in more chain slack.
- Harsh downshifts (that is never good for timing components)
-A sudden change in momentum resulting after a high RPM pull when the throttle is lifted can result in a jolt in the chain leading to a prematurely stretched chain. The oil pressure will simultaneously have a jolt resulting in expedited abuse on the timing tensioner.
